I-XL-b
I-XL.JPG - I-XL is a Medalta company. Malcolm Sisson from I-XL, "The “bowl” was originally called an ashtray. It was one of several similar designs by Luke Lindoe, who was in charge of research and clay development at I-XL in the early 1960’s. He left I-XL to establish Plainsman Clays, a pottery clay and supply business operating from Medicine Hat. The ashtrays were used as promotional giveaways to important clients. They were pressed at the National Porcelain plant (in Medicine Hat), a subsidiary of I-XL, from similar clays, mainly imported, as used for making porcelain insulators. The glazes were quite varied but were often representative of the glazed brick that I-XL was making at the time. Luke Lindoe is deceased but there are a couple of retired employees of National Porcelain that might remember more detail."
